Why NTM
Why Nepal Travel Mate
Owner-led, locally staffed, and honest about the mountain. Here is what that means in practice.
There are plenty of trekking agencies in Kathmandu. Here is why people book with us instead of a large one, in plain terms.
You book the operator, not a reseller
Nepal Travel Mate is owner-led. The trip you book is the trip we run. Big agencies often resell routes operated by someone else, which means the company you paid is not the company on the mountain. We do not work that way. There is no layer between your booking and the trail.
The guide you book is the guide on the trail
When we confirm a guide, that is who walks with you. No last-minute swaps to whoever was free. Your guide knows the plan because your guide helped make it.
- Lead guides are NTB-licensed under the April 2023 registered-guide rule.
- Guides are trained in wilderness first aid.
- We carry a pulse oximeter on every trek to track how your body handles altitude.
Safety is built into the itinerary, not added on
Most altitude trouble comes from going up too fast. Our acclimatisation above 3,000 m is conservative by design. Rest days and height gains are planned around how bodies actually adapt, not around squeezing the route into fewer days.
We also require every trekker to carry insurance that covers helicopter evacuation. It is not optional. If something goes wrong at altitude, the time it takes to get you out can matter more than anything else.
Fair to the people who carry the loads
A trek is only as good as the team behind it, and that team includes porters.
- Porter loads stay within TAAN guidance, capped at around 25 kg.
- Porters are insured and given proper gear for the conditions.
- We pack out plastic, batteries, and tin instead of leaving them on the trail.
How a company treats its porters tells you most of what you need to know about it.
Honest about difficulty and price
We will tell you if a route is harder than you expect, or if your dates are wrong for the conditions. We would rather lose a booking than put you somewhere you should not be. Our prices reflect the real cost of running a trip well, including fair pay for the team. We do not quote a low number and add charges later.
Permits and logistics handled in-house
TIMS, ACAP, MCAP, Sagarmatha National Park entry, and restricted-area permits are all handled by our office. You do not chase paperwork across Kathmandu. Transport, lodges, and the schedule are ours to sort out, so the only thing you carry is your day pack.
Send us your dates and the route you have in mind. We reply by email within one working day, and a 25% deposit confirms the trip.
