Trek Overview
The Khopra Danda Trek is one of the Annapurna region's best-kept secrets — a quiet, community-based alternative to the famously crowded Poon Hill trail, offering equally spectacular mountain views with a fraction of the foot traffic. Unlike most treks in the region, the lodges along Khopra Ridge are community-owned, meaning the money you spend on food and accommodation goes directly toward funding local schools, health clinics, and village development.
The journey begins with a drive from Pokhara to Nayapul, following a similar start to the Annapurna Base Camp trail before branching off through Ghandruk and Tadapani into quieter forest trails. As the route climbs above the treeline, the reward is Khopra Ridge itself, a dramatic viewpoint positioning you eye-to-eye with Mt. Dhaulagiri across the Kali Gandaki Gorge, alongside sweeping views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Nilgiri. For trekkers wanting to go further, an optional high-altitude day hike leads to the sacred Khayer Lake, a glacial lake held holy by both Hindus and Buddhists.
Despite reaching altitudes comparable to some of Nepal's more famous treks, Khopra Danda remains genuinely uncrowded, even in peak season, a rare combination of accessibility, spectacular scenery, and community-driven tourism that makes it one of the most rewarding shorter treks in the Annapurna region.

Accommodation & Meals
Accommodation
You'll spend two nights in Pokhara in a comfortable hotel before and after the trek. On the trail, you'll stay in a mix of traditional teahouses and community-owned lodges, particularly around Chistibung and Khopra Ridge. Unlike commercial teahouse routes, the money you spend at these community lodges goes directly toward funding local schools, health clinics, and village development. Rooms are twin-share with a bed, blanket, and pillow, with facilities becoming simpler at the higher community lodges.
Meals
All meals during the trek are included. Breakfast typically consists of porridge, eggs, and pancakes. Lunches and dinners feature dal bhat (rice with lentil soup), noodles, soups, and simple pasta dishes, prepared by teahouse and community lodge families. Vegetarian options are always available. Menu variety narrows slightly at the community lodges around Khopra Ridge, given how remote and lightly-visited this route is compared to nearby Poon Hill.

- Busier trails during peak spring weeks
Safety & Altitude Awareness
Safety Measures
- All guides are licensed and experienced on the Khopra and Annapurna Conservation Area routes
- Guides carry first aid kits and pulse oximeters
- Regular health checks throughout the trek, especially on the Khayer Lake excursion day
- 1:6 guide-to-trekker ratio (maximum)
Altitude Sickness
- Mild AMS symptoms are possible above 3,000m, particularly on the Khayer Lake side trip
- Symptoms: headache, nausea, fatigue, difficulty sleeping
- Prevention: proper hydration, steady pace, and awareness during the Khayer Lake push
- No dedicated acclimatization day is required given the trek's moderate altitude profile, though the Khayer Lake day should be approached at a measured pace
Emergency Protocol
- 24/7 emergency contact support from Pokhara office
- Helicopter evacuation can be arranged (weather permitting)
- Portable first-aid kit and oximeter carried by your guide
- Rescue coverage must be included in your insurance
