Trek Overview
The Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek is a journey to the foot of the world's third-highest mountain, in one of Nepal's most remote and least-visited corners. Tucked into the far eastern edge of the country, close to the Sikkim and Tibet borders, this restricted-area trek is the only route in Nepal that leads to two separate base camps in a single trip.Pangpema on the north side and Oktang on the south connected by a high pass crossing that few trekkers in the world ever attempt.
The journey begins with a flight to Bhadrapur followed by a long overland drive to Taplejung, before the trek proper follows the Tamur River through Limbu villages, terraced farmland, and dense forest. As the trail climbs toward Ghunsa, the landscape shifts into high alpine terrain, glacial valleys, and yak pastures, with Kanchenjunga's massive summit gradually coming into view. From Ghunsa, the route splits: first north to Pangpema for close views of Kanchenjunga's north face, then back over Mirgin La Pass to the valley's southern side, ending at Oktang beneath the mountain's dramatic southwest face.
This is a trek defined by scale and solitude, weeks of walking through a landscape almost entirely free of other trekking groups, deep Limbu and Tibetan-Buddhist culture, and two entirely different perspectives on one of the world's great peaks.

Accommodation & Meals
Accommodation
You'll spend nights in Kathmandu and Taplejung in comfortable hotels before and after the trek. On the trail itself, accommodation is a mix of basic teahouses in villages like Ghunsa, Khambachen, and Tseram, with camping required at more remote stops like Lhonak and Ramche where teahouse infrastructure doesn't exist. Rooms are twin-share with a bed and blanket. There are no hot showers along most of the route, and charging facilities are limited, bringing a portable power bank is strongly recommended.
Meals
All meals during the trek are included. Breakfast typically consists of porridge, eggs, and Tibetan bread. Lunches and dinners feature dal bhat (rice with lentil soup), thukpa, noodles, and simple soups, prepared either by teahouse families or your dedicated trekking cook at camping stops. Vegetarian options are always available. Because this is one of Nepal's most remote trekking regions, menu variety narrows significantly the deeper you go into the valley.
Difficulty & Fitness
Requirements
- Ability to walk 5–9 hours per day on remote, high-altitude terrain
- Comfortable with sustained high elevation across multiple weeks
- No serious heart, lung, or blood pressure conditions

Training Tips
- Start cardio training 2–3 months before the trek
- Include regular multi-day hikes with a loaded backpack
- Add stair climbing and sustained leg-strengthening work
- Build up to walking 12–15 km comfortably at altitude
- Consider a shorter high-altitude trek as preparation if this is your first major expedition-style trek

- Cold nights at Lhonak and Pangpema
Safety & Altitude Awareness
Safety Measures
- All guides are government-licensed, as legally required for this restricted area
- Guides carry first aid kits and pulse oximeters
- Regular altitude/health checks throughout the trek, especially approaching Pangpema and Mirgin La
- Small guide-to-trekker ratio given the remoteness and length of this route
Altitude Sickness
- Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a serious consideration on this trek, with extended time spent above 4,000m
- Symptoms: headache, nausea, fatigue, difficulty sleeping
- Prevention: proper acclimatization, hydration, gradual ascent
- Our itinerary includes a dedicated acclimatization day at Ghunsa, plus a naturally gradual ascent profile through Khambachen and Lhonak
Emergency Protocol
- 24/7 emergency contact support from Kathmandu office
- Helicopter evacuation can be arranged, though response times are longer given this trek's extreme remoteness
- Portable oxygen carried by your guide
- Rescue coverage must be included in your insurance
- Nearest medical facilities: basic health post in Ghunsa, with full medical care only available back in Taplejung or Kathmandu
