Trek Overview
The Ganesh Himal Trek is one of Nepal's true hidden gems, a route tucked between the Langtang and Manaslu ranges that sees only a handful of trekkers each season, despite offering some of the most varied and dramatic scenery in the country. Named after the elephant-headed Hindu god, the Ganesh Himal range is home to four peaks above 7,000m, rising above the region's deep canyons, terraced hillsides, and dense rhododendron forests.
The journey begins with a drive to Syabrubesi before the trail branches away from the busier Langtang and Tamang Heritage routes into the quieter Ruby Valley. From there, the trek follows a gradual ascent through traditional Tamang villages, alpine forest, and open ridgelines, crossing the high point of Pangsang La before reaching Ganesh Himal Base Camp itself, set beneath the range's towering, glaciated peaks. The return route descends through different villages, passing natural hot springs along the way, a welcome reward after days on the trail.
With minimal infrastructure, a fully supported camping setup, and a trail shared with almost no other trekking groups, the Ganesh Himal Trek offers a genuinely untouched Himalayan experience, rich Tamang and Gurung culture, dramatic peaks rarely photographed, and the kind of solitude that's becoming increasingly rare on Nepal's more established routes.

Accommodation & Meals
Accommodation
You'll spend two nights in Kathmandu in a comfortable hotel before and after the trek. On the trail, accommodation is a mix of homestays and basic teahouses in villages like Gatlang and Tipling, with full tented camping required around the base camp itself, where no permanent infrastructure exists. Since this is one of Nepal's least-developed trekking regions, facilities are simple throughout, this is very much a trek where the camping crew and homestay families, not modern lodges, define the experience.
Meals
All meals during the trek are included. Breakfast typically consists of porridge, eggs, and toast. Lunches and dinners feature dal bhat (rice with lentil soup), noodles, and simple seasonal vegetable dishes, prepared by homestay families or your camping cook depending on the stop. Vegetarian options are always available. Menu variety is noticeably simpler than on Nepal's more established treks, given how remote and lightly-visited this route is.

- Guides carry first aid kits and pulse oximeters
- Regular altitude/health checks throughout the trek, especially from Day 5 onward
- Camping cook and support crew trained in remote first response
Altitude Sickness
- Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) becomes a consideration above 3,000m, particularly approaching Pangsang La and base camp
- Symptoms: headache, nausea, fatigue, difficulty sleeping
- Prevention: proper acclimatization, hydration, gradual ascent
- The route's gradual ascent through the Ruby Valley naturally supports acclimatization, reducing AMS risk
Emergency Protocol
- 24/7 emergency contact support from Kathmandu office
- Helicopter evacuation is the only rescue option in this region and can be arranged (weather permitting)
- Portable first-aid kit and oximeter carried by your guide
- Rescue coverage must be included in your insurance
